End Citizens United was established as a traditional PAC in 2015 with the single-minded aim of reversing the controversial Citizens United Supreme Court decision of 2010. Entering its first election cycle of the 2016 Presidential ballot, End Citizens United sought to test the waters of campaigning on the decision by just three Democrats to sign a pledge not to accept special interest and corporate PAC funding. The success of the PAC in those early election campaigns and in the election of the more than 30 Democrat candidates who have mad their way to Washington since the election of President Trump has been stunning. Many Democrats see the decision to turn their backs on corporate PAC finding as a test of their grassroots, progressive nature of each candidate including the latest progressive entrants to its list of candidates. Over the course of the latest election campaigning season for the 2018 Midterms, more than 180 Democrats have pledged to refuse the option of corporate PAC funding with more than 80 already winning their primaries. Some of the names on the list are the new stars of the Democrat party while others are better known for their center ground beliefs. Kirsten Gillibrand is one of the better-known candidates to have refused funding of more than $1 million for her election campaign from corporate PACs.
The arrival of End Citizens United in the elections finance sector has highlighted the problem of corporate PACs and special interest groups. Fighting to overturn the problem of the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling of 2010 remains the major fight on the part of many Democrats. End Citizens United was formed to protect the remaining campaign financing regulations which have been threatened by the majority of Republicans in Washington. End Citizens United has become something of a watchdog for those conservative candidates attempting to bypass the rules of the Federal Election Commission, including Florida Governor Rick Scott as he funnels cash from a Super PAC to his own Senate campaign accounts.
The 2018 midterm elections are only six months away. In this regard, End Citizens United has kept on endorsing candidates who have continuously demonstrated their commitment and support to the campaign finance reform efforts. The organization continues to throw its support behind political candidates with a proven track record of turning down dark money. These candidates have also, on numerous occasions, voted in favor of laws and policies that help channel the money to Washington. End Citizens United has endorsed a number of candidates some of whom are vying to unseat Republican incumbents. Visit End Citizens United on Twitter for more updates.
Unlike their counterparts, candidates who prefer not to align themselves with big money spenders and corporations usually have an unfair advantage. End Citizens United is committed to ensuring that there is a level playing field to all the candidates. They do this by raising money from the grassroots and using that money to support the election of pro-reform candidates. Since its establishment, the End Citizens United has been a force to reckon with during elections. Candidates endorsed by the ECU this year will have access to over $35 million raised through small-dollar contributors. The End Citizens United calls for anyone who is concerned with the influence dark money has on the country’s politics to join them through their contributions. Some of the candidate endorsed by the ECU include:
Beto O’Rouke – He is one of the house representatives that did not accept donations from PAC. He is looking to unseat Senator Ted Cruz. Beto has represented Texas’s congressional district for over six years now.
Randy Bryce – Randy has for a long time tried to replace Wisconsin’s longtime senator and speaker of the house Paul Ryan. Since Paul Ryan will not be running, the chance is ripe for Randy to take over.
Brendan Kelly – Brendan is the State Attorney for St. Clair County, Illinois. Known for fighting back against big corporations such as banks and pharmaceutical companies, Brendan is looking to unseat Congressman Mike Bost.
ECU has been in existence since March 1, 2015. The organization, also known as ECU, has slightly over 50 employees. Its main objective is to fight special interest groups and wealthy individuals who dash out money during elections.
Big Money 20’s main mission is to defeat candidates who do the bidding of special interests and instead allows billionaires and the special interests themselves to spend their own big money on electoral campaigns. Senator Ted Cruz, for example, went as far as to state that money can represent speech and argued that the campaign finance reform was about silencing the people. Which goes against the right to free speech.
End Citizens United (ECU) is a grassroots organization trying to overturn the 2010 Supreme Court case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (FEC), which legalized billionaires and special interests to anonymously spend unlimited amounts of money on their election campaigns. ECU’s main mission is to work to end such Big Money in politics and using methods of raising the issue to the public by doing things like endorse pro-reform candidates, work with state campaigns to pass pro-reform laws, and using memberships as an outlet of forum discussion. ECU’s current president and executive director, Tiffany Mueller holds the record for leading to organization to more than three million members and donations of over $25 million with the average member donation of almost $15. Her leadership has also led to the election of 15 pro-reform members, including Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire.
ECU currently has a list of about 123 candidates. Some of these include Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, and Senator Elizabeth Warren. To ECU, being pro-reform is the understanding that elected officials are there to represent the country’s entire population and not just to favor large corporate companies.
The latest news that ECU is focused on is Paul Ryan’s retirement and the latest evidence of coordination between Rick Scott and the New Republican Super PAC. Claiming that he’s only responsible for their financial account, an FEC complaint investigation has found that Scott guilty of impulsively wiring $1.2 million of soft money into Super PAC without testing the Senate bid. Which also does not follow the finance limit regulations.
End Citizens United is a non-profit PAC founded after the Supreme Court decision on the Citizen United’s case in 2010 which permitted corporations and individuals to make unlimited financial donations to political candidates.
The organization is determined to bring an end to the USA corruption and dark money in the election process. It is supported by grassroots donors who are dedicated to bring an end to the campaign finance reform and restore integrity and democracy in the country. The corporation is also currently looking into the influence of foreign money in the election process. According to the law, it is prohibited to use foreign money in a political campaign. It is however unfortunate that it is not easy to control foreign money from entering the election system due to the 2010 Supreme Court ruling.
There are investigations being carried out by committees on whether a Russian company with direct ties to the Kremlin was involved in the 2016 elections financially. This Russian company is suspected to have purchased political Ads on Facebook worth over 100,000 dollars to influence Donald Trump’s win and Hillary Clinton to lose. Trump denied any knowledge and contact with the Russian President. However, this claim was contradicted by some campaign messages that were discovered to have been sent by George Papadopoulos between the months of March and October 2016 which included one with the subject “Meeting with Russian Leadership-including Putin” This was published by various respected publications.
A group of Chinese nationals was uncovered to have donated 1.3 million dollars through American Pacific International Capital to a Jeb Bush super PAC. At the beginning of 2017, there were 15 cases being investigated by FEC about foreign money influencing the US elections, the investigations have proved difficult because it is hard to track the money as there are few rules and laws in place regarding such contributions. There were also findings that a wealthy Mexican businessperson donated money to a super PAC through shell corporations.
Financial contributions to political leaders are the beginning of corruption. This is because organizations and individuals with the most money tend to ‘buy’ political favors from their supported candidates, therefore, affecting the way things are done. The End Citizens United was founded to put an end to this corruption through supporting and funding candidates who are dedicated to campaign finance reforms. The PAC currently endorsed Randy Bryce to run against Paul Ryan speaker and 2020 republican’s choice of president.
Dick DeVos, the politically active billionaire, entrepreneur and philanthropist, has given his endorsement to republican candidate Marco Rubio. The Michigan native is hoping his support is able to boost the chances of Rubio in his battle for the republican nomination. DeVos stated that it has taken time for him to learn about all candidates before feeling comfortable enough to make a choice. He firmly stands behind his selection, as he feels Rubio has the experience and vision necessary to be president.
